National Semiconductor Extends Leadership in LVDS Technology with Innovative Products to Improve System-Level Designs

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jan. 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Raising the bar in low voltage differential signaling (LVDS) technology, National Semiconductor Corporation today announced three new LVDS-based products that will be on display at DesignCon 2003. National's new offerings aim to provide complete, system-level solutions for a wide variety of applications ranging from high-speed interface and integrated circuit testing to medical imaging.

National's latest innovations include an LVDS physical interface device, an analog-to-digital (A/D) converter with serial LVDS interface and a system test access device. National Semiconductor designed these devices to speed up reliable data transmission, to reduce board size as well as costs, and to test and debug complex circuit board designs and backplanes, respectively. National will demonstrate the three new products at its booth #826 here in the Santa Clara Convention Center, Jan. 28-29.

"National Semiconductor was instrumental in creating the LVDS technology and continues to drive the market with technological innovations to address today's design challenges," said Stephen Kempainen, marketing director of the LVDS product line, National Semiconductor. "Customers designing with National's industry-leading LVDS products are able to enjoy an unmatched level of integration, performance, power consumption and reliability."

Latest Offerings Broaden Product Portfolio

Targeting the PC printer market, National's new DS90LV049 Dual LVDS PHY transceiver provides the performance and reliability necessary for next generation ink jet and laser printers. With a unique dual driver and dual receiver configuration, the LVDS PHY delivers up to 400 megabits-per-second (Mbps) switching rates without consuming the power. In addition, the DS90LV049 provides complete set of benefits that include low voltage power supply compatibility, low noise generation, high noise rejection, and robust transmission.

The DS90LV049 is available now at $1.99 each in 1,000 units.

National Semiconductor is also showcasing the industry's first A/D converter with serialized LVDS outputs. This device gives customers greater flexibility in system partitioning and hence product design in various communications infrastructure and consumer applications. National designed the device for lower noise generation and dynamic performance, providing serial data through 2 pins only to enable transmitting digitized data over cables or backplanes. In applications such as ultrasound imaging, the serialized LVDS outputs of the device eliminate 1024 traces on the board, providing huge cost savings and facilitating s smaller form factor. It is also ideal for copier manufacturers as the device's lower output voltage swings reduce electromagnetic interference.

The new A/D converter is available for sampling through National's Data Conversion Systems group.

Implementation of JTAG Made Easier

The SCANSTA112 is a direct answer to customers' request for easy testing and debugging of their newest complex circuit board designs and backplanes cost-effectively. This device is a critical component for any system-level JTAG implementation. The IEEE 1149.1 Standard for Boundary Scan Test has become the standard test approach and use of JTAG features at the system-level is getting more popular among PLD and FPGA vendors.

National's SCANSTA112 provides the richest feature set for the most flexible architectures of any JTAG support device on the market. It enables extending JTAG test and programming features throughout the entire backplane for a comprehensive system-level approach to a standard test, programming and bus configuration. It is also an addressable JTAG multiplexer with 7 local scan ports, allowing the use of JTAG from design debug and manufacturing test to field repair and upgrades. The SCANSTA112 provides complete support for distributed architectures including those that use National Semiconductor's LVDS serializer/deserializer (SerDes) interfaces between cards. The STA112 enables access to the JTAG enabled at-speed BIST (Built-In-Self-Test) features of the LVDS SerDes devices, such as the SCAN921025 10-bit Serializer and the SCAN921226 10-bit Deserializer.

The SCANSTA112 is sampling today at $9.50 each in 1,000 units.
